If you sell a course, a service or a product that needs explaining, you’ve probably run into this problem: people ask the same questions over and over, and every sale takes a call or a long conversation. A VSL solves exactly that.
What a VSL is
VSL stands for video sales letter. It’s a pre-recorded video that explains your offer from start to finish: the problem you solve, why your solution works, what’s included and what the person needs to do next.
It’s like having your best salesperson explain your product with the same message, at any hour, to everyone who shows up.
How it differs from a reel
| Reel | VSL | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Grab attention and attract | Explain the offer and persuade |
| Length | Seconds | Two to several minutes |
| Where it lives | Social media | Sales page, platform or ad |
| When | When the person doesn’t know you yet | When they’re already interested and want to understand |
The two work together: the reel attracts, and the VSL turns that interest into a qualified lead.
The structure of a good VSL
- The hook. The first few seconds name your ideal client’s problem or desire, so they feel the video is meant for them.
- The problem. Why what they’ve tried so far hasn’t worked.
- The solution. What you offer and why it’s different.
- The proof. Results, testimonials or your experience, to build trust.
- The offer. Exactly what’s included and how it works.
- The next step. A clear call to action: sign up, book a call or send a WhatsApp message.
A real example: Master Gera
Master Gera sells certification courses in the EC0110.02 standard. For his online course I produced a pre-recorded VSL specifically to explain the offer, and it works hand in hand with his paid ads and the setup of his online platform.
Since he started with this strategy, he has billed up to 80,000 pesos a month (about $4,300 USD), with only six posts a month. The VSL does the explaining; the content and the ads bring the right people to watch it.
How a VSL fits into a strategy
If you want to set up the follow-up part, here I explain how to automate your business WhatsApp.
Which businesses need a VSL?
- Online courses and certifications. It’s the most common use and one of the most effective.
- Professional services. Consulting firms, law and accounting offices, clinics and any service that needs explaining.
- High-ticket products. Real estate, machinery, software or any purchase people think over before making.
- Launches. A new product that people don’t understand yet.
Do you need a studio to record it?
Not necessarily. A VSL can be produced with a professional shoot or with footage you record yourself following a clear script. What matters most is the script and the editing: the order of ideas, the pacing, the on-screen text and the call to action.
I work on VSLs both ways: full production, or editing footage you record yourself, anywhere in Mexico. I help you with the script, give you directions for recording and handle the editing, so the video is ready for your page or your ads.
