When a business decides to invest in digital marketing, it almost always runs into the same question: agency or independent professional? Both can work, but they don’t serve every business equally well. Here I’ll explain, honestly, how they differ and why, for most small and mid-sized businesses, an independent professional tends to be the better choice.
How an agency usually works
An agency is a team: someone sells you the service, an account manager looks after you, and behind them are designers, editors, community managers and ad specialists. When it’s a good one, it has lots of hands and established processes.
The challenge is that there are several layers between you and the person doing the work. Your idea goes through the account manager, then the creative team, then whoever posts it. Something can get lost at every step, and timelines stretch out.
How an independent professional works
An independent professional is one person who understands your business, sets the strategy and does the work. You talk directly to the person who designs, shoots, edits, launches the ads and reviews the results.
There are no middlemen: what we talk about is what gets done.
The comparison, point by point
| Aspect | Agency | Independent professional |
|---|---|---|
| Who you talk to | An account manager who coordinates the team | Directly with the person doing the work |
| Who’s accountable for results | Spread across several departments | One person, from start to finish |
| Speed of adjustments | Depends on the team’s workload and processes | Quick adjustments, without going through several hands |
| Knowledge of your business | Can get diluted across many accounts and people | The person serving you knows your business inside out |
| Cost | Includes the agency’s overhead | You pay for the work, not the overhead |
| Flexibility | More rigid packages | Adapts to what your business needs at each stage |
The advantages of working with an independent professional
1. Direct communication
When you have an idea, a question or something urgent, you talk to the person who can solve it. You don’t wait for the message to reach the creative team or for the account manager to find room in their schedule.
2. One person accountable
In marketing, results depend on everything being connected: the content, the ads and the follow-up on every lead. When one person handles all of it, there’s no way to “pass the buck.” If something isn’t working, it gets spotted and fixed.
3. They know your business inside out
An independent professional usually works with only a few clients at a time, which lets them truly understand who you sell to, what sets you apart and which messages work with your audience.
4. You invest in the work, not the overhead
An agency has offices, sales teams and several layers of coordination, and that shows up in the price. With an independent professional, your investment goes into the work that moves your business forward.
5. Real flexibility
Your business doesn’t need the same things when it’s starting out as when it’s already growing. An independent professional can start with you on content, add ads when you’re ready and automate later, without locking you into a fixed package.
What to check before hiring an independent professional
Being honest also means saying that not all freelancers are equal. Before you decide, check:
- That they master more than one discipline. A good independent full-service marketer knows content, ads and automation, not just one thing.
- That they have a real portfolio. Ask to see work done for real brands.
- That they work with clear processes. Assessment, strategy, production and reporting, with visible progress.
- That your accounts are yours. Your social media, your ad accounts and your leads should always be in your business’s name.
- That they give you reports you understand. No jargon or data that just confuses you.
“What if I depend on just one person?”
It’s the most common objection, and it’s a fair one. The answer lies in how the work is done:
- Your accounts are always yours. Social media, ad accounts, CRM and leads stay in your business’s name, no matter what.
- Everything is documented. The strategy, the calendar and the progress of each piece live on a shared board that you can see too.
- Clear deliverables. You know what gets delivered each month and when.
With that, your marketing doesn’t depend on anyone’s memory: it depends on a system that belongs to you.
“Can a generalist be good at everything?”
Another frequent objection. Doing “a little of everything” without mastering any of it doesn’t help. But content, ads and automation aren’t three separate worlds: they’re parts of the same system, and someone who masters them together can make the creative work as an ad and make sure every ad ends in a well-handled lead. The key is to ask for proof: a real portfolio, certifications and clear processes.
When an agency makes sense
A large agency can make sense for companies that need to produce a very high volume of pieces at once, in several countries, or with in-house marketing teams to coordinate. For most local businesses and small companies, that size isn’t necessary, and you end up paying for it without using it.
How I work as an independent professional
Since 2018 I’ve been helping brands in Mérida and other cities look better, communicate better and get more leads. I have a master’s degree in Digital Marketing from UADY (Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán) and certifications from Meta (Media Buying), Google Ads (Search) and TikTok (Media Buying). I handle everything digital for your business in one place:
- Monthly content, video and design, with strategy and a calendar.
- Digital advertising on Meta, TikTok and Google, with clear reports.
- Automation and CRM so no message goes unanswered.
- Video, photorealistic visualization, brand identity and websites when your project calls for them.
Some of the videos I produce for brands.
You work directly with me, you see the progress of each piece on a shared board, your accounts are always yours and you can stop whenever you want. If you want to see how all the pieces connect, I explain it in what a 360 marketing strategy is.
So, freelancer or agency?
If you’re looking for a direct relationship, someone who knows your business and is accountable for the whole result, an independent professional is the most efficient option. If you want to know what that would look like in your case, message me and let’s talk.
