You post, you take care with your photos, you upload stories… and your posts are seen by the same handful of people as always. It’s not that you’re doing it wrong: that’s how social media works. A business’s organic reach keeps shrinking, and the question is no longer whether paid advertising makes sense, but how to do it so it’s worth it.
Why organic content is no longer enough
Platforms show your content mostly to people who already follow you, and even then only to some of them. On top of that, each post has a very short life: within a day or two it stops being shown. To grow organically alone you’d have to post several times a day, every day, which almost no business can keep up (I explain this in detail in how much a social media video costs and how many you need).
Organic content is still important: it builds trust with people who visit your profile. But to reach new people consistently, you need paid ads.
What you’re really buying when you pay for ads
Paying for ads isn’t “buying likes.” What you’re buying is the ability to decide:
- Who you talk to. Location, age, interests and behaviors. If your business is in Mérida, your ads can be shown only to people in Mérida, or within a radius around your business.
- What you want to happen. That people message you on WhatsApp, book an appointment, visit your website or get to know your brand.
- When and how much. You set the budget, and you can pause, raise or lower it at any time.
- What works and what doesn’t. Every dollar is measured: how many people saw the ad, how many messaged you and how much each lead cost.
That last part is what changes everything. With well-measured ads, you stop guessing.

Meta, TikTok or Google: where to advertise
- Meta (Facebook and Instagram): the most versatile option for local businesses. It lets you target very precisely by location and interests and send people straight to WhatsApp.
- TikTok: ideal if your audience is young or if your product shines on video. The content has to feel natural, not like a TV commercial.
- Google: shows up when someone is already searching for what you sell. It’s perfect for services people look for urgently or with clear buying intent.
You don’t need to be on all of them. The strategy decides which ones to start with based on your business, your audience and your budget.
Why so many people feel “ads don’t work”
It’s almost always because of one of these mistakes:
- Using the “Boost” button. It’s the easiest way and also the least precise: it leaves almost every decision up to the platform.
- Ads without good creative. The video or image is what stops the scroll. An ad with a weak hook costs the same, but nobody watches it all the way through.
- Measuring only likes and reach. What matters is how many qualified leads came in and how much each one cost.
- Not replying in time. The ad works, people message you… and nobody answers until the next day. That lead is already gone.
The last two are solved outside the ad: with a system that replies and follows up.
Ads work best as part of a system
A stand-alone ad is like opening your shop’s door with no one there to serve customers. What works is connecting all the pieces:
If you want to see how the messaging part is put together, here I explain how to automate your business WhatsApp.
How to start without throwing your money away
- Start with a small test budget. The goal of the first few weeks is to learn which message, audience and creative work.
- Measure and scale only what works. What doesn’t deliver gets turned off; what does gets more budget.
- You pay the ad budget directly to the platform. That way you know exactly how much is being invested, and your ad accounts are always yours.
- Ask for reports you understand. How many leads came in, from where and how much each one cost, with no jargon.
Why it pays to have the same person handle content and ads
When one person does the design, another the video and a third the ads, no one is responsible for the overall result. If the campaign doesn’t work, everyone blames someone else.
When you work with an independent professional who handles content, ads and automation, the creative is designed with the ad in mind, the ad is adjusted based on what the data says, and the follow-up is ready for every lead who comes in. One person is accountable for everything. I go deeper into this in freelancer or marketing agency: which is right for your business.
So, is it worth it?
Yes, when it’s done strategically: good content, the right audience, clear measurement and a system that takes care of every lead. Ads aren’t an expense to “be seen on social media”; they’re the most direct way for the people who can actually buy from you to find you.
