When a small business decides to invest in digital advertising, the first question is usually: should I advertise on Facebook and Instagram, or on Google? Both platforms work, but they work differently, because they reach people at different moments.
The core difference: searching vs. discovering
- Google Ads shows you to people who are already searching for what you sell. Someone types “dentist near me” or “inventory software” and your ad appears. Purchase intent is high, but you only reach people who already know they need it.
- Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) shows you to people who weren’t looking for you, but who might need you based on their profile and interests. It’s discovery advertising: you create interest before the search even exists.
In short: Google captures demand that already exists; Meta creates it.
Quick comparison
| Meta Ads | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How it reaches people | By profile, interests and behavior | By what the person searches for |
| Where the customer is | Not looking for you yet | Already searching |
| What matters most | The creative: video or image | The keyword and the landing page |
| Best for | Visual products, local services, new brands | Services with clear or urgent searches |
| Sending people to WhatsApp | Very natural | Possible, though it usually sends them to your website |
When Meta Ads makes sense
- Your product or service shines on video or in images: food, real estate, beauty, fashion, tourism, events.
- Your customer doesn’t know they need you until they see you.
- You want people to message you on WhatsApp or Instagram.
- Your brand is new and you need people to know it.
On Meta, the creative is everything. A good video stops the scroll; a bad one costs you just the same and nobody watches it to the end.
Videos made to stop the scroll on Instagram and Facebook.
When Google Ads makes sense
- People actively search for what you offer: professional services, repairs, health, software, B2B suppliers.
- The purchase is urgent or carefully considered, and the customer compares options.
- You have a clear website or landing page to send people to.
On Google, the right keywords and a page that answers exactly what the person searched for matter most.
What about TikTok?
TikTok Ads works on the same logic as Meta (discovery), with an audience that watches a lot of short video. It’s a great option if your customer is young or if your product lends itself to natural, entertaining content. The content should feel native to the platform, not like a TV commercial.
When to use both
Many small businesses get their best results by combining them:
- Meta sparks the interest with content that shows off your business.
- People who got interested search for you on Google later, and you show up there too.
- With remarketing, you show your ads again to people who already saw your content or visited your website.
My honest recommendation: start with the platform that best fits your business, with a test budget, measure for a few weeks, and add the other one once the first is working.
What matters more than the platform
Whichever you choose, results depend on the same things:
- A good creative or a good landing page.
- The right audience, clearly defined.
- Clear tracking: how many leads come in and how much each one costs.
- Fast replies to everyone who writes in. An ad that works loses its value if nobody answers in time; that’s what automating your business’s WhatsApp is for.
And one important detail: the ad budget is paid directly to the platform, and your ad accounts should always be in your business’s name.
How I can help
I run campaigns on Meta, Google and TikTok for small businesses all over Mexico, remotely, with certifications from all three platforms. Beyond the ads themselves, I can take care of the creatives and the automated follow-up, so the ad, the content and the customer service all work together. If you’re still wondering whether it’s worth investing, I explain it in is paid social media advertising worth it?.
Message me, tell me what you sell and to whom, and I’ll tell you which platform I’d start with.
